Finding Profitable Niche Markets: Step 5: Root Keyword Phrase

The final piece in the niche finding jigsaw is to determine the best root keyword phrase.

The root keyword phrase is the one that all the content will spring from. It's the phrase that you will use to determine the problems, needs pain points and desires in your target market.

Almost all of your keyword research will start with some variation on the root keyword phrase, so it's worth getting right.

Determine the Root Keyword Phrase

This last step is actually an easy one!

Go to the Google search TLD of your choice (mine is .co.uk, yours could be .com, .de, .fr or anything else) and type in each phrase in turn, in quotes, and do a search.

For each phrase in the spreadsheet, note two values -- the number of results returned (Competition in the sheet) and number of different suggested keyword phrases at the bottom that contain the exact phrase you typed in (Topics).

The most appropriate root keyword phrase is the one with the most volume (or value), least Competition, and most scope (Topics).

If you want to get fancy about the Competition index, then you can replace it with something called the KEI (Keyword Effectiveness Index*).

The formula for this is:

  • Volume^2 / Competition

The result of all this hard work should be twofold:

  • a spreadsheet that has a Root Keyword Phrase, and a lot of other useful phrases (just in case you run out of content ideas!);
  • a  mind-map of all your niche, sub-niche, and micro-niches.
These can be used to create several authority sites relating to micro-niches, and become a web of content that has entries at the sub-niche and niche level, too. All of these so-called web properties will work together to generate page views and revenue for you.
